Data Management Plans

FAIRmat Support for Data Management Planning

FAIRmat supports researchers in condensed-matter physics and materials science by providing infrastructure, tools, and guidance for managing research data according to FAIR principles. As part of these efforts, FAIRmat assists researchers with the creation and management of Data Management Plans (DMPs).

A Data Management Plan (DMP) describes how research data will be handled during and after a research project. This includes:

  • how data will be generated and documented,
  • how data will be organized and stored,
  • how data will be protected and backed up,
  • how data will be shared and published,
  • and how long-term accessibility and reuse will be ensured.

Data Management Plans are increasingly required by funding agencies such as the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the European Commission, and the European Research Council (ERC). Creating a DMP at an early stage helps researchers establish clear workflows and supports compliance with FAIR principles as well as institutional and funding-agency requirements.

DMP4PS – FAIRmat RDMO Service

To support researchers with data management planning, FAIRmat provides DMP4PS, an RDMO-based service for creating and managing DMPs in the physical sciences. The platform provides templates and guidance aligned with FAIR research data management practices and common funder requirements.

DMP4PS is developed within the NFDI consortium FAIRmat and supported by the NFDI Basic Service DMP4NFDI, which promotes interoperable and reusable DMP services across the NFDI landscape.

FAIR Research Data Management in FAIRmat

DMP4PS is part of FAIRmat’s broader ecosystem for FAIR research data management and complements the digital infrastructure provided through NOMAD.

Through the NOMAD ecosystem, FAIRmat enables:

  • research data publication and sharing,
  • metadata management and interoperability,
  • electronic lab notebooks and digital workflows,
  • FAIR-compliant experimental and computational workflows,
  • and long-term accessibility and reuse of research data.

By connecting data management planning with FAIRmat services, DMP4PS helps researchers plan, document, and implement sustainable research data workflows from the beginning of a project.
