FAIR-DI Award for data handling in a PhD thesis

The Award

The FAIR-DI Award recognizes an excellent PhD thesis in the field of physics, materials science, or chemistry, which stands out by its exceptional handling of research data following FAIR principles. FAIR stands for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Re-purposable (or Re-usable). 

The recipient of this award will have the opportunity to present their thesis at the FAIR-DI European Conference on Data Intelligence 2024 and will receive a prize of €2000.

The FAIR-DI European Conference on Data Intelligence will be held in Karlsruhe, Germany, on the 27-30 October, 2024.

Selection Criteria

Besides the scientific quality of the thesis, the award committee will emphasize exemplary data management and publication practices. FAIR-DI values adherence to the FAIR principles for effective data publication, emphasizing metadata as essential for data utility and reusability. Eligible candidates must have obtained their PhD title in 2023 or later.

Required Submission Materials

  • PDF of the thesis (in the field of physics, materials science, or chemistry)
  • Certificate of thesis acceptance
  • 2-page synopsis highlighting data management and publication strategies, including references to data repositories and related resources
  • If applicable, references to works utilizing the published data
  • A letter of recommendation by a scientist familiar with the PhD thesis
